Ways to Pray: Ideas for Your Prayer Group

Feel free to change up the way you pray each month. One method is not better than the other. Metro Chattanooga is a diverse city with over 40 different Bible believing denominations, and thousands of individual churches. This means there are many different traditions that we are working alongside of. We have complied a list of ideas of different ways to pray. Some are more hands on, some more hands off, some more communal, some less so. We do recommend using the Pray 365 Prayer Guide during your times of prayer.

    1. Divide the day into periods of time (30 minutes, 60 minutes, etc.)

    2. Participants sign up for a slot and commit to praying during that time.

    3. For churches, consider joining with another congregation so it’s easier to cover the entire 24 hours with prayer.

  • Types of Fasts

Your personal fast should present a level of challenge, but it is very important to know your body, your options, and most importantly, to seek God in prayer and follow what the Holy Spirit leads you to do.

    Complete Fast

In this type of fast, you drink only liquids, typically water with light juices as an option.

    Selective Fast

This type of fast involves removing certain elements from your diet. One example of a selective fast is the Daniel Fast, during which you remove meat, sweets, and bread from your diet and consume water and juice for fluids and fruits and vegetables for food.

    Partial Fast

This fast is sometimes called the “Jewish Fast” and involves abstaining from eating any type of food in the morning and afternoon. This can either correlate to specific times of the day, such as 6:00 am to 3:00 pm, or from sunup to sundown.

    Soul Fast

This fast is a great option if you do not have much experience fasting food, have health issues that prevent you from fasting food, or if you wish to refocus certain areas of your life that are out of balance. For example, you might choose to stop using social media or watching television for the duration of the fast and then carefully bring that element back into your life in healthy doses at the conclusion of the fast.

  • For churches, consider hosting a congregation-wide prayer service dedicated to praying for Chattanooga. If you would like assistance in hosting this service, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us!

  • Whether with your prayer group or individually, go for a walk and spend time in prayer.

  • Utilize technology to help you pray. We encourage starting a group text thread with your prayer group.

For some people, typing/writing out prayers can be helpful. Divide the monthly prayer prompts among your group and share requests and testimonies of answered prayers.

  • This method of prayer usually works best in an individual setting and creates space for you to meditate on the prayer prompts and for God to speak to you.

  • For churches and organizations, consider organizing a time where people in your community can drive onto your campus or property and be prayed for right from their car.

  • Sometimes seeing the immediate needs of our community can move you to specific times of prayer. This may lead you to pray for things outside of the monthly prayer prompts and this is ok. We encourage you to listen as the Holy Spirit urges you to pray.
